A high-quality robot vacuum can make a big difference in the elimination of allergens like pet hair and dust. However, not all models are created equal.
There are a variety of options to choose from, whether you want a vacuum that is pet-specific or a robot to complement your other vacuum.
1. Eufy RoboVac Edge G30
The G30 Edge, the latest model from Eufy's budget-friendly range of robotic vacuum cleaners, is the most current model. It does a good job picking up pet hair, crumbs, and dust on hard floors but falls behind the best models in terms of removing flour from carpet. In our tests, it missed 74% of the powder on hard floors, and 26% on carpet.
The G30 Edge is unique in its ability to map your home with an electronic map. It can keep track of the rooms it has already cleaned and prevents it from returning to those areas which is a major issue with other robots that rely on the use of old-fashioned magnetic tape to define zones that aren't allowed.
The G30 Edge has other conveniences that include a 'Find My Robot' mode that emits an ominous music until it's located and a directional pad that lets users to move the robot. It also has a built-in auto return function that will send it back to its charging station when the battery is empty, an important safety feature.
2. Neato Botvac D-Shape
The Neato Botvac D-Shape robotic is a robust machine that comes with a variety of intelligent features. It is able to clean floors well, and it climbs on carpets with high piles fairly easily. The app comes with advanced features such as boundary lines, remote access to the robot when it is in operation and a host of other options.
This model is the most recent in a long-running line of robots manufactured by Neato. It features a unique "D shape when viewed above. The design offers a number of advantages, including an improved corner cleaning system and a bigger dust bin than the majority of models. The D-shape also allows the robot to get under furniture better than those with a circular design.
When first starting a cleaning process, the D-Shape will pause briefly to make use of spinning infrared lasers to look over and evaluate the space. Then, it will begin to clean in a grid by moving in a logical manner from one area to another until the floor is completely covered. This method of cleaning is much more effective and thorough than the random approach employed by other companies.
The d-shape design also permits the D-Shape's large dust bin, with 700ml, compared to 400- 600ml for similarly priced robots. It struggles a little bit on carpets, but it's superior to other robots in this price range. The Roomba EVO is also very adept at navigating between various floor types. It doesn't get stuck on transitions like older generations. The dual multi-surface rubber brushes flex to adapt to different flooring types and resist tangling in pet hair.
The i3+ EVO's obstacle-avoiding capability isn't as robust as the other robots we tested and it frequently encountered objects during our tests such as handbags shoes and pet toys before continuing its journey. It also had issues with coarse sea salt which it did a whirlwind of instead of taking it up.
The i3+ EVO includes a number of amazing features that make it worth the additional cost compared to other Roomba models, such as a self-emptying dustbin and advanced control via the app. You can schedule cleanings and create custom routines. You can also create no-go zones to prevent the robot from entering certain areas. Its intelligent scheduling can suggest additional cleanings during high allergy times based on your regular routine. The navigational system is unreliable, however, and often vacuums in irregular lines like diagonals or zigzags, rather than parallel to walls.
4. Shark AI Self-Empty XL
With detailed mapping technology, this smart robot knows your home better than you can. It has dual brushes which adjust to different kinds of floors and are able to avoid tangling. This makes it the ideal option for homes with pets. You can control the robot through the app, or activate it hands-free with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. The dock, called Omni, automates tasks such as filling and cleaning the robot's water tanks, emptying debris bins, and charging and drying the mop pads.
It's a great value. The Shark AI Self-Empty XL offers numerous advanced features, including self-emptying bins and mapping that can store a lot of trash. We tried it out in a home with a mix of bare floors and low-pile carpeting and found it able to move and clean extremely well, even getting into corners. The vacuum also does a good job of picking up pet hair on carpeting, though it doesn't have the same power as our top choices.

Shark is still a good option if you're looking for something cheaper or prefer to control and monitor your system via your phone rather than using a remote.

This robot can do both vacuuming and mopping. The two-tank system of this robot lets it mop or vacuum at the touch of a button. In our tests, it was able to easily switch between different surfaces and was excellent at picking up pet fur from hardwood floors and carpets. It also comes with an edge-sweeping tool for removing hair from baseboards and walls.
This is a great choice if you are looking for a robot that is affordable and comes with additional features. It was able to maneuver around obstacles in our tests and can be controlled via an app or voice. It also supports scheduled cleaning and has a large trash bin to collect messes before they become full. The only downside is that it could take up to 166 minutes to complete its task, but that's still better than most other robots we've tested.

The 694 is better than its competitors despite the limited features. It got a perfect score of 10 in our test of cereal carpet, and passed our cat litter test with just a few scattered pieces. It's less efficient on hardwood floors, though. Its side brush is often scattered with large pieces of cereal that cling to the floor instead of vacuuming them up. It also had difficulty collecting table salt on bare flooring, as many grains fell across the floor.
It supports app control via the iRobot HOME app as well as voice command via Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant (via an external device, which is sold separately). It identifies your cleaning habits and offers personalized schedules. Cliff Detect and a edge-sweeping tool ensure that it gets into areas that are difficult to reach, and Dirt Detect sensors alert the robot to heavily soiled spots. It has a bin that automatically empties and a battery life of about 60 minutes. The more expensive iRobot J7 is more sophisticated and better on all surfaces.
